I'm almost afraid to let my secret out, but this little store deserves to be known. People I've met in the shop have asked why I travel from Sherman Oaks to Venice Boulevard to knit when there are yarn stores nearer to my home; my answer is always the same - because I love the women in the shop! I'm not just learning how to knit, but I'm making new friends. When I'm there I feel as if I'm in a real-life version of Friends. From the staff to the regular customers, the store comes to life as these characters share their common passion. The staff is warm and friendly, and offers assistance to all who enter the door, and EVERYONE is very helpful and patient, especially with us beginners! Annette especially, has the patience of a saint and never hesitates to offer her help when I need it. The yarn selection is GREAT and it seems as if they've just received new stock every time I go in! They have a nice supply of books on knitting and crocheting and supplies that I still have no idea what they are used for!

I have visited this new store a couple of times and have been thrilled with the service and supplies. They have a large supply of yarns, needles and books. I went in looking for a certain type of pattern book (knitting baby sweaters with larger needles) and everyone was so helpful. Although this is not the easiest request I realized, they seemed to know the books inside and out and directed me to several options in either a book or individual pattern. What I love about this shop is that they will spend time with you to help you pick out yarn or patterns without you feeling the hard sell. They seem to truly love what they do and love sharing it with people. Each time I visited the shop there was a group of people either learning to knit or just hanging around knitting in the back at a table. The group was laughing and enjoying a lively conversation. The ages of these people ranged from 70 to 20 years old. I found it refreshing to see this shop was not geared only toward a certain type of knitter but towards anyone who enjoys knitting. Although I hate to see the world descend on this shop I hope that by suggesting it to knitters their clientele will increase which will keep the shop around.

All About Yarn is a fairly new shop in Azusa on the corner of Cerritos and Arrow Highway. I went a few times and each time I was greeted with a friendly hello. I was overwhelmed with the beautiful yarn selection and the courtesy the lady helped me with. I really was impressed that I've got help with a project by just mentioning what my problem was. Very uncomplicated, Veronica said, show me how you do it. She then explained to me what I do wrong and showed me on a knitting sample how the stitch is done correctly. This was just great. Just like that I received a 20 minute knitting lesson. I have been back several times and also have completed one of her classes. I've always wanted to learn continental knitting. I just love it there. During my lesson I experienced how she managed to teach and to help customers without neglecting anyone. This is a store to keep in mind for all your fiber and lesson needs. Later I found out that Veronica is actually a real knitting teacher in the Azusa adult school and that she is co-owner of the shop together with Pillar. I met Pillar too and like Veronica she is very knowledgeable and friendly. Only difference between the ladies, one prefers knitting the other crocheting. 11/08

Last August, I was running out of yarn in the middle of my project. I went to another yarn shop first but couldn't find what I was looking for. When I was on my way to JoAnn's I past All About Yarn. I didn't even know there was a yarn shop in Azusa. I made a quick U-turn and minutes later found myself in a little cozy yarn shop. Three ladies where sitting on a round table having a wonderful time knitting/crocheting and talking. Only thing missing in that picture was a cat in the window. Anyhow, I was impressed with all the different types of fiber, colors and designers the little shop carried. Further I was amazed how reasonable the pricing of the yarn was. I found the yarn I was looking for, for less then I paid originally for it so I was very happy. Since I had time, and the nice lady asks me if I like to sit down and join the round table, I did just that. I started my project and was even further surprised that I got a unexpected (free) lesson in continental knitting. Victoria showed me how to knit continental and explained to me that it is much faster and less has less movement doing it this way. She also said, it will take me awhile to get the hang of it, (she was right), but in the mean time I am a fan of continental knitting and this little cozy yarn shop. Tuesday nights, is knit-night and I went twice and had a marvelous time. I made new friends and am very happy when I have time to just come in sit down and have a great time. 3/10

This shop is truly a treasure! And so are the folks that work there. Always helpful, knowledgeable and capable--they are always willing to offer assistance. Wether it is helping you find the right yarn for a project, search for a pattern or book or learn a new stitch, I have never met such great knitters! The classes are wonderful too. I especially like the Stitches Stitches Stitches class and Knit Fixes as well. I can't forget to mention the fact that beautiful yarn abounds in this store. So much so that it is difficult for me to leave! If you're in the area, I highly recommend you stop in and check out this fabulous shop!!

Great shop - warm people - great selection of quality yarns and tools. Their stock has grown significantly over the past year (They've only been open for a couple years.) They often have trunk show items on display for inspiration as well as the newest books. They offer classes and advice. Highly recommended.
BTW -next door to a quilting store and there is a beading store around the corner and a stained glass supply shop across the street- dangerous territory for your credit card!

This is a one-of-a-kind yarn store in the Union Square district in San Francisco. Have visited the store twice and have done mail order numerous times. This is a yarn store that has yarns that I have found nowhere else in the world. All the yarns are spun for them in Italy, France, Japan and other countries. No brand name yarns. There are novelty yarns of all types and beautiful colorways. In addition to the fantastic selection, the staff there have always been very pleasant and helpful. In addition, you can order up to 12 yarn samples (5 yards each) at 50 cents per yarn. This is a great way to look at specific yarns without having to buy the whole skein. Their shipping has always been prompt and accurate. Highly recommended.

staff are excited to hear about my projects and to see
the finished products. They post many pictures of
customers' projects and the garments they display
demonstrate the qualities of the yarns well. A final
perk is that they have swatches of all the yarns so
that it is easy to get a sense of what the yarns will
look like when knitted; also, you are welcome to try
knitting with their yarns to see what different
stitches and combinations of yarn will look like.

A wonderful knitter's oasis in the San Francisco Bay Area. Well stocked with many brands: Brown Sheep, Classic Elite, Muench, Plymoth, GGH, Rowan and Crystal Palace and much more, both basic wools, cottons and a delightful selection of novelty yarns. There are classes for beginners and intermediates as well as Open Knitting Night every Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30. In six short months, the owner, Christina Stork-Launer, has created a welcoming space for knitters of all ages and abilities. By the way, the store's name is a play on Practical Art.

I used to shop regularly at Atelier and most of the time the staff is friendly and helpful. All the employees say hello and somehow it doesn't feel annoying in the very tight space. My son likes to play with the buttons and the only comment I've gotten from the staff about that is that he not pull the bins out all the way so they don't spill. Their yarn is not price tagged so when I went to buy my usual Mondial Kross I was stunned to pay $4 more per skein and wasn't told about the increase. I have shopped there at least once a week for a few months and I generally buy the same brand of yarn yet the sales girls look at me as if they've never seen me before and ask me questions as if I've never talked to them. I know that I don't drop $1000 at a time but I do spend about $60 per visit. I am courteous to the staff and just a bit unusual looking so I am surprised that no one recognizes me as a regular customer.

Wonderful shop, big and well stocked with yarn and nicely organized by gauge, what a concept. I wish all yarn stores did that. Also yarns are clearly priced. There are many sample projects throughout the store so you can see the yarn knitted up. The accessories seem to be abundant, books, needles, etc. They offer a nice variety of classes for all levels of knitters too. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. I requested a pattern for some yarn I had a home and one of the staff had one at home, copied it and sent it to me in the mail. Wow, what service! Nice location with plenty of parking. My new favorite yarn store.

This is a mother and daughter owned and operated shop located just east of Sacramento. The shop has been in operation about two years and has been so successful that they are moving to a bigger shop in the same center July 1. Babetta (the mother) and Maya (daughter) are the only reason I have been able to learn to knit. First, I'm left handed and they have been able to teach me and help me when I'm in trouble.
The yard selection is beautiful and they continue to receive new exciting yards continually. Their pattern and book selection is also great and they are both very helpful in helping find just the right pattern and yard for the project I have in mind.
They offer lots of classes for both knitters and crocheters at convenient times as well as private lessons when needed. Maya is a wonderful teacher and has incredible patience. 5/07

I purchased some expensive hand dyed yarn, the color came off on my wooden needles. That was a first. I went in to discuss the matter and got the brush off; they did not offer any help. Also the food that is sold there has an odor to it and it can get into the yarn. If the daughter is going to work the store she needs to find a baby sitter to watch her children. I never took my children to work with me. She or her mother are at times more concerned with the children than the customers. I have spent a lot of money in the store and also have referred it to other knitters. After being brushed off that has stopped. 2/11

This is a lovely little store. There is a lot of yarn to choose from, great patterns, and helpful staff. They made me feel valued as a knitter and a customer. They have kits available and lots of ideas for projects. Also when I called a couple weeks later to ask about a yarn I had seen in their shop, they were VERY helpful. I will be going back to the store for more!

A charming and growing store, jam packed with all sorts and price ranges of yarns. They sort their yarns by color, which appeals to me a great deal. Both mother and daughter who run the shop are extremely helpful, and know their stock. I was just passing through town, but felt right at home sitting down at the front table with some regulars and knitting away -- on (acrylic!) yarn I had bought elsewhere! Highly recommended.

I have been shopping for yarn and learning to knit with the wonderful mother and daughter owners. Their kindness, expertise and generousity are limitless. It is a hang-out for knitters, young and old in our small,beach community. Conversation while you knit in the front room is always interesting. Of course the yarn selection is outstanding, best I have seen anywhere in this country or in Europe. I do not believe there is a better shop anywhere! 6/09

I noticed someone posted a negative recommendation about Concepts in Yarn in Rolling Hills Estates and I have to completely disagree with the comments. I am a new knitter (3 months now) and I have to say that the staff is so very helpful. I can stop by any day of the week for help and someone is always there to take the time to help me with a dropped stitch or when my gauge is off.
When you take a look around the store there is a tremendous selection and so much variety. June (the Owner) gave me a great idea for the beginner that I am for Christmas presents. She showed me how to put something together in plenty of time for the holidays. Joann, my teacher is great designer and I try to stop by at least once a week for her to check to ensure that my latest project is going the way it should.
Concepts in Yarn has an extensive collection of all the latest books and materials one would need to create beautiful work. I have never seen a place that had so much variety for yarn, whether it be for knitting, crocheting, needle pointing or other stitchery.

I went to this yarn shop about 4-5 times and found myself increasingly dissapointed with the customer service, although they have a good selection of yarn. Perhaps it is because I am a younger knitter (20 yrs old) and they don't take me seriously, but the women in the store generally tend to ignore me and even when I do ask them questions, they give me brief, unhelpful answers and I am left to search for yarns and patterns on my own while they sit around to talk and work on their own crafts with their friends. I finally became so frustrated with the workers at this store that I now drive to other yarn shops that are further away for better service.

After my bad experience at L'Atelier I was still determined to learn to knit. I called Concepts in Yarn and learned that they offered several beginning classes. I have only just started on my series of 5 classes (5 - 2hr classes for 75.00) and I'm really enjoying it. The teacher was knowledgeable and helpful. The yarn selection is great. I'm so excited to try something else once I get a more little experience under my belt. Apparently in the class we will be doing 2 scarves and a hat. I've been able to stop in the shop anytime I've run into trouble with my project and they've been very helpful. They also offer classes on felted bags which I can't wait to take. All in all my experience with them has been great.

I recently visited this shop in in search of some dpns. The shop is nice-looking with lots of beautiful yarns with sample projects on display and carried the supplies I was looking for. However, the prices were definitely on the high end (if not overpriced). Although there were at least 5 (older) women who appeared to work there, I was not greeted by one person (not even the cashier) nor was I offered any assistance. This was my first, and will be my last, visit to this yarn shop. There are other LYS's in the area with better service.

This is an excellent sized store, with a variety of yarn that is not carried by the large chain stores. I just started taking knitting classes here as well, and the instructor is great, she didn't change my style of knitting (continental). The yarn is a bit pricey, but it is worth it if you are working on something special. I was amazed at the beauty of the Japanese yarns that the store carries. The day I went was my first class, and even though they were understaffed for that day, I still received all the help I wanted. I suggest looking around the shop first, comparing prices of yarn, etc. with other stores. I do like that they carry the largest selection of bamboo and rosewood needles.

After reading several of the comments on this store I felt I needed to add my experience there. This store has a huge amount of supplies and beautiful yarns. They have several completed projects for you to view and/or buy. Although the prices are very high, if you are an experienced knitter who knows what you want then you will like this shop. I have been there a couple of times and found the staff very unhelpful. It appears that if you take a class there the women are happy to help, as I noticed in the previous reviews, but if you are stranger off the street you will not receive any service. I have been knitting for years but still found the staff there very intimidating. There are so many knitting stores that are warm and welcoming but this is not one of them.

Owner Mary Lou Mott stocks loads of yarns from various manufacturers. This place is just crammed with yarn--I thought I was in heaven. The thing that most impressed me was the sheer variety. You can buy exotic designer yarns, simple acrylics or blends of wool and synthetic Whatever your taste and pocketbook dictate, Cottage Yarn can supply it. Of course, there is also a large range of patterns, books, needles, etc. Ms. Mott knows her stock like the back of her hand and is a friendly and helpful guide.

This shop is crammed with yarn, piled high on tables, bins and baskets. And totally disorganized I might add, some yarns are grouped together and others of the same type are located across the shop, nothing is priced; so you must ask for the prices, or just be surprised when you go to purchase them, it is like a bargain basement where you must rummage through bags and bags of yarn until you see or find something you may want. Way too chaotic and claustrophobic for me. Plus the prices are not that low for such inconvenience.

Don't be fooled by the name - there's a nice little yarn shop in one corner of this quilting store. The owner was friendly and helpful but not overly intrusive. She had an excellent selection of novelty yarns as well as some basics (Cascade 220). Lots of Crystal Palace yarns, Crystal Palace needles, and Addi Turbos. The yarn is well organized and easy to see, and there is room to browse and even spread out to play with colours and styles. There's a table where we sat and rewound a ball of novelty yarn. It was really nice to be in a well lit, comfortable shop with friendly employees and owners.

Creative Hands in San Carlos, California is the best place to go and spend some time knitting with some of the most helpful knitters I have ever come across. The people that work the shop are the greatest, but the people
sitting around the table doing their own knitting are always ready to help as well. They have all kinds of wonderful yarns, from the regular medium priced
to some very high end yarns that are so beautiful to work with. They have a large selection of books, needles, bags, all the things you would need to just sit down and start right in on a project. They have classes there as
well, and occasionally a celebrity knitter gives a class.

This store is fantastic. They have a great selection of yarns, novelty as well as the basics, with new yarns arriving seasonally. The store also has an extensive knitting and crochet book, magazine and pattern selection. The owner is a wonderful person, attentive, friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. She knows everything there is to know about knitting and is more than kind with her help and advice for novices as well as advanced knitters who want to try something new. Although I have been to most of the stores in the Los Angeles county and vicinity, I have yet to find another place that has the same kind of warm, inviting atmosphere, the rich selection of yarns, and the unpretentious, down to earth, personalized service that Elegance Designer Yarns offers. There are also classes available.

Elisabetta is located on top of an art gallery in the middle of downtown Los Gatos. They carry higher end yarns, which are priced a bit out of my range
but I had fun looking at the interesting colors and textures, nonetheless. Elisabetta also has some ready knit garments and Wolford stockings, as well
as other clothing. I saw some pretty plastic needles that were see through with ribbons of colors in them which I thought would make great gifts. Elisabetta also has knitting machines on display and several bins of discount priced yarns.

If you are interested in people helping you or being courteous, or are expecting an occasional hello this is not the place for you. As I walked in I noticed that nobody in the store was even interested in helping a 16 year old female in the least bit. The ladies knitting in there gave me nothing but an occasional frown. Like when I go into any yarn shop, I was obligated to purchase something. My grandfather was only treated respect as he pulled put his pocketbook. Needless to say, I won't be going back.

I went to Greenwich yarns and was treated so poorly! The people in there cared more about where their dog was then whether or not I needed help. While there I handed my almost 3 year old son one of those inexpensive tape measures from a basket on the table and one of the employees rushed over and took it away from him saying that it might break! We are talking about a $4.00 tape measure that would've kept his hands off the $20 yarn. No one smiled at him and each time I walked up to an employee and smiled to start to ask for help they just looked away.

I have never seen so much yarn in one place! The variety is amazing, if a little intimidating. The enormous amounts of patterns and booklets and books are hung on the wall on racks, and there is always someone there to help you with any problem you may have. And, they have needlepoint/embroidery supplies too!

This shop is a huge shop and it is wonderful. The yarn selection is overwhelming, short on accessories, but the yarn selection is abuntant! The staff is helpful and very knowledgable. The shop is totally organized, everything is marked and priced and the yarn is orderly. Their prices aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for...and this is San Francisco.

I have been knitting 3 years and I think this is the friendliest shop I have encountered.It is a small but fantastic boutique in West Los
Angeles (Brentwood). They have an incredible
selection of yarns all arranged by color which really
gets my needles going crazy.
Jennifer also does custom designs, I can bring her a
picture from a magazine and she'll help me find yarn
and make a pattern in my size. Sometimes there is a
wait (could be an hour or two) but I just spend more
time knitting samples and end up buying a ton of yarn.
She carries a lot of hand-dyed yarns too and gorgeous
cashmere in her own colors.

The owner is a woman (over 70) who has been in business for 25 years. She is available by appointment so she can give you her unlimited attention. Incredible yarns, in the range from the most reasonable (for people with limited money) to the most elaborate and unusual, including ribbons. She also
does the most professional finishing. Clients from all over the world send their pieces to have her finish the item.

Knit Witz advertises that it is a fabulous place to knit and unwind. I must say they live up to this motto. The Knit Witz staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They seem to take a personal interest in all their customers, remember their names and greet them each time they enter the store. There are samples of projects using various yarns that inspire one to pick up their needles and knit away. Their classes are excellent...small groups and very personal. They are always available to help with your project and even have a Stitch Doctor available for appointments (at no charge).

Elk Grove has waited a long time for a Knitting store and it was definitely worth the wait! Knitique is a wonderful place to shop and just spend time. From the minute you walk in the door they make you feel welcome and wanted. Danielle won't let anyone leave the store until she's sure you know what you are doing. I've watched her with new knitters and she's more afraid that someone will buy yarn and get frustrated and never knit again than just making the sale. What a refreshing change. They will even wind your yarn for you - even if you didn't buy it there! Classes are offered and there is a wonderful Wednesday night Knit In that I haven't had the chance to attend but plan to soon. Her yarn selection is wonderful and everything is easy to find and openly displayed. What impressed me most is the first time I went in there, not only did the help greet me; they made sure they asked my name! I couldn't ask for a more welcome addition to our community. I'm sure the husbands of all us local knitters aren't that happy - we'll be spending a lot more money now that we have Knitique!

The Knitting Room is a small shop but from what I saw it has a pretty satisfactory selection of yarns. I wished I was making something from
fingerweight yarns because they seem to have a good selection of those.
They have patterns for American Girl sweaters, as well as some old catalogs on display which is useful if you are planning to gift a little girl with doll clothes and want to see what is in vogue for the 18" crowd. The small size of the shop may be a bit of a disadvantage if you are planning to take on a great, ambitious project. I love the Knitting Room, however, because of its intimate atmosphere. The owner is really friendly and there always seems to be a tableful of knitters when I go in there. If I ever own a yarn shop, I hope it has the same familial atmosphere as this particular shop.

I read the other review of L'Atelier and was surprised to see that it referred to a store in Santa Monica. I don't know if they're related -- but Jeanne Lo's review is dead on accurate about the Redondo Beach store, as well. Snooty staff; in-groupy feeling; really overpriced yarn. I wanted to learn to knit and called the shop to inquire about classes. I was told that they do not offer classes, but would be happy to teach me if I just stopped in. So, on a Saturday morning I headed down to the shop. The shop was very crowded with happy people who all seemed to know each other and none had any interest in knowing or speaking to me. I hesitantly approached the counter where I was basically ignored. Feeling terribly out of place, I just left. I would not recommend this shop to anyone. The yarn was indeed beautiful, but it seemed very expensive to me. One skein I picked up was 90.00! The five minutes I spent in the shop, no one spoke to me - I don't think anyone even looked at me. Maybe you have to know someone in order to shop there.
What a shame, I felt like Julia Robert's in Pretty Woman: I have money to spend here and no one will help me.

Let's Knit is an unassuming little yarn shop in an unassuming little neighborhood. The owner and most of the customers are Japanese-American women of a certain age. The yarns are kept in plastic bags for the most part, so it's not the most tactile of experiences. BUT, Mrs. Oyama carries a great assortment of Noro yarns, as well as Debbie Bliss and some other luxury yarns (alpaca, angora, silk, lots of novelty yarns) and her prices are a little lower than some of the fancier stores. She also has a great assortment of bamboo needles, as well as a few addi turbos and other accessories and pattern books and magazines. The Village of Mendocino itself offers many bed & breakfasts and quaint inns, as well as a lively cultural milieu. The rug and Yarn hut is a small, intimate yarn shop with many basic and specialty yarns, plus spinning and weaving supplies and instruction. My favorite part of the store is the atmosphere. The owners and family are extremely friendly and helpful. A large area near the front of the store is taken up by a circle of comfy chairs, and someone is always sitting and knitting or crocheting. Customers are encouraged to drop by just to hang out and knit (Saturdays especially) and there is always someone willing to help out if you have problems. I'll pass up larger and better stocked stores for this place all the time, because the camaraderie can't be beat.

Candy is a marvelous designer. The shop is filled with samples of sweaters, scarves. and ponchos she has designed. She can alter patterns to fit any size or figure type. She also assembles garments and does repairs on new and vintage items.

I have been to this store a couple of times. If you know exactly what you are looking for this is a great store. They have a pretty good selection of yarn and they also offer box kits. I expected the kits to be extremely over priced but was suprised to see that the kit was much cheaper than buying all of the supplies seperately. The staff however is very snobby! I bought a pattern there that called for increases and decreases and the pattern did not specify the type of increase/decrease. When I asked they informed me that if you had taken classes here you would know the type to use. I guess it's impossible for anyone to learn to knit anywhere but there. When I asked a staffer if I was doing a yarn over correctly she told me that she had never heard of a yarn over but if I came in for a class they could show me. Ok I guess, but I later found out she is one of their teachers. If you know what you want and don't mind feeling snubbed Suss is the place for you.

uncommon threads (yes, that's how they write their name), has a large selection of quality yarns in a range of prices. The store is a delight to be in, with sample sweaters hanging on top of the cabinets and around the ceiling, and sample scarves and shawls everywhere. The shop is arranged by the type of yarn, and somewhat by manufacturer: Rowan, Classic Elite, Dale, Jaeger, Brown Sheep, several of the knit designer yarns, and loads of novelty yarns. They have a great selection of books and patterns, and a sizable baby and sock yarn selection. The folks there are a little gruff, but if you ask a question, they will certainly help. Los Altos is just up the Peninsula from San Jose before you get to Palo Alto; it is a nice little town to wander around in as well, with lots of small shops, and some great coffee at Peets just a few doors down from uncommon threads!

You only have to open the front door of this lovely shop, and someone is already saying Welcome! And welcome is how you feel. You look around and see cool, calming colors, lots of luscious yarns to browse through and big comfy chairs to relax in. Stephanie Steinhouse, the owner, and all who work with immediately make you feel at home. You can look around, take your time, and then as they say, Let me know if I can help you with something. Lessons and classes are excellent with fine teachers, bringing you knitting and working on it at lunchtime is encouraged. Help with problems (and what knitter does not run into them) is always available. They are open three nights week until 8 P.M. as well as on Sunday from 1 to 4 in addition to their regular hours. Stephanie keeps up with what's new and provides her customers with opportunities to volunteer in the community. This year many went to The Children's Hospital in L.A. to teach kids to knit while they were on dialysis. Stop in, unwind and feel pampered and cared for...in this knitting haven. 8/09

This shop is truly a gem! It is so spacious inside with 2 separate areas to sit comfortably and knit. The yarn varies from the high priced brand names to the lower end acrylic yarn (but the acrylic is in so many lovely colors you'll be surprised at the selection). Everything is so well organized that I just want to cruise each and every cubby so I don't miss a thing!
I have an almost 3 year old son who for the most part is well behaved but he likes to walk around the store quite a bit and check everything out. The staff at Urban Knitting Studio treats my son with both respect and a huge sense of humor without making me feel like an idiot for bringing a proverbial bull into a china shop. I watch the owner treat each and every customer with a friendly hello and genuine smile and I am amazed that any other store can compete with this attitude.

I discovered them almost twenty years ago when I lived in Orange County. They have one of the most incredible stock of yarn and other needle craft supplies I have seen in one place. Although at first glance the yarn may appear somewhat disorganized, Rose and Chris, the
wife and husband owners of Velona's know where everything is and they have a store room with more stuff that go to when they can't find something on the shelf. If I ever have a multi-color pattern, I love to go to Velona's because I know I have an excellent change of leaving the
store with EVERYTHING I need. It may not always be the same brand of yarn but it will be comparable with all the colors I want. If by chance Rose doesn't have a color, she will order and ship if I can't stop by the store to pick it up.
They have an extensive collection of pattern books and magazines and supplies for just about any needle craft such as crochet, needlepoint, cross stitch, Swedish weaving, etc. They also offer classes and workshops.

I visited this store with a friend while in California recently, based on the review I read here. We found the store to be extremely disorganized and very difficult to browse through for inspiration. The yarns were crammed on shelves and not easily seen. I think if you went here knowing exactly what you wanted, you might very well find it. If, however, you go to a yarn shop looking to find yarn or garments on display that inspire you to knit an item, you'd be hard pressed to be inspired here. Both my friend and I were very disappointed in the store, the attitude of the people working there, and the type of help received.

Yarn everywhere, stuffed into every little nook and cranny. Good luck trying to browse. I also had a HORRIBLE 1st experience there. I was a brand new knitter, and a kinetic learner. I couldn't figure out the purl stitch, and asked the owner lady who approached me. In return I basically scolded for asking her. She basically told me that if she helped every young new knitter who walked through her door - she would be out of business in a month as my landlord doesn't take excuses instead of rent money. Horribly embarrased - I pretended to browse, and then pretended that I had left my ATM card at home - and rushed out of the store.
A few months later, I had reconciled to myself that everyone has bad days, and I decided to try once more (as I was looking for a pattern none of my online sources carried). This time, not only did the people working there talk snidely about me as I browsed the sale bin - but I overheard them complaining about a customer who wanted them to call her back in regards to an order she placed. Does this lady really expect us to call her in Denver on a $17 order?
Utterly put out, I sent a lengthly email to them (no reply ever received) - and have vowed to never spend a penny there.

This yarn shop came highly recommended to my friend by a co-worker. What a disappointment! The yarns are crammed into bags, often without prices or tags on the shelves that match the yarns in the bags or cubby holes, and it's nearly impossible to see. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the organisation (cashmere-merino laceweight next to Lopi Lite?), although most of the sock yarns seemed to be together. The aisles are so narrow it's hard to even turn around, let alone browse, and if you were working on a project I don't know where you'd find space to sort out the yarns you were looking at. Many of the straight needles were jumbled in a basket and it took 20 minutes to sort them out to find the size I was looking for. There are more needles on the back wall but customers aren't allowed back there. This would make sense if the Lantern Moon needles hadn't been jumbled in the basket with all the rest, while the needles hanging on the back wall were little cheap needles!
I'm an experienced knitter who designs my own garments and projects. If the owners aren't willing to take the time and energy to organise their store so that I can find something without begging for their help, I'm not willing to spend the time and energy to spend my money there.
The patterns are also stuffed into holders and are all dog-eared. The whole shop is overcrowded, dusty, and shabby, and it's really not worth a trip or your time or money.

Checked out this store when I was traveling and yes, it looks disorganized and doesn't have the 'eye-candy' appeal of some places, but I walked away with a several pair of Holtz and Stein needles and a new copy of an out-of-print knitting book I'd been searching for on eBay. I found the owner helpful when I asked for assistance finding things. Happy with my experience, but I could see where this place wouldn't be for everyone.

And for knitters they carry hand spun yarns, a selection of hand painted mohair, rayon, and cotton, some New Zealand wools, a selection of Noru yarns, sock yarns and cotton of different sizes in tens of wonderful colors! They have a few novelty yarns and if there is anything that you want that is not is stock they can order it for you. They give excellent customer service.
Their selection of fiber related books is huge; they carry children's books, history books, how to books and books I haven't seen anywhere else.
You might also find the perfect handmade buttons for your project in this shop.
The little Danish town of Solvang is only 5 miles off highway 101 halfway between Santa Barbara and Santa Maria on the Central Coast of California.

please knitters also. They are very friendly, knowledgeable and building their yarn supply and class offerings all the time. They started very small but in a wonderfully inviting setting; they have added and grown so that it is a positive pleasure to just go visit/browse/sit-and-knit/crochet. A small lending library with a month term is an additional bonus I particularly like.

I love going to Medrith's shop. She has a wonderful selection of yarns which include the complete line of Jamieson and Smith Shetland wool. She has a sale bin which is so much fun. It usually has discontinued colors in it at a great discount. But the best thing about the shop is Medrith herself. Her enthusiasm is so contagious that you just can't help leaving
there with a smile - and usually a project of some sort that you just can't wait to see develop. She also carries a great line of books and patterns and, of course, needles and supplies.

I have visited this shop a number of times when I am in SO. CA and have always found it to be an absolutely delightful shopping experience. The yarns are displayed beautifully and organized by type of yarn. The prices are easily visible, no need to keep asking. There are numerous items displayed around the store for inspiration- if the yarns themselves aren't inspiration enough! There are comfortable tables and chairs available to knit up a swatch for gauge. The staff has always been very helpful and knowledgeable, even designing a pattern on the computer for some yarn I purchased. In addition to their regular inventory, they have a really huge bin of beautiful sale yarns which are packaged in bundles and are fun to dig through for some unexpected treasures. I always recommend a visit to this store when I know any of my knitting friends will be traveling in the area.

I cannot say enough good things about this store. I am a new knitter and I have been looking for a good yarn store. I have relatives in Orange County and my Aunt uses the Yarn Lady. When she took me there at first I was overwhelmed. They have so many different types of yarn and the staff is so helpful you feel like you are there with an old friend. The owners husband, Dutch is the sweetest old man. He spent over 30 minutes with me helping me pick the right type and color of yarn for the project I was starting. After selecting a yarn I was invited to stay and knit up a swatch and the ladies helped me tailor my pattern to the swatch. The store is very well organized and doesn't feel cluttered at all (a big feat for a store with such selection!) If you are anywhere near this store I suggest a stop!

Tucked away at the end of a strip mall off Lincoln Blvd. this small, laid back shop is a find and a wonderful alternative to the higher priced yarn shops on the Westside. The shop has a wide selection of yarns in different price ranges. The store appears to have everything, from funky eyelash yarns, acrylic/wool blends, to Rowan yarn. I was very pleased. I have visited this store only 3 times over the past two years (I no longer live in CA) but each time I visit, the shop's variety appears to get better and better. Sucedo, the woman who was working there that day, was very friendly. She is knowledgeable, yet unobtrusive. Most importantly, there's no attitude that some people find from other shops and silly yarn snobs.This shop will be greatly appreciated by true diehard knitters who dont mind rummaging through stacks of pattern magazines, and yarns piled high on shelves. If you're the type of knitter who's low-maintenance, knows what she is looking for and hates being over-solicited, this place is highly recommended. It's also a great stop en route to the beach.
