Small Diagonally Knit Bag Pattern

Knit Bag Pattern

This bag is easy to knit and is knit diagonally (sometimes called bias). It's a small bag, great for an evening out. You can tie the handle onto the belt loop of your jeans. It's also small enough for a child's bag.

Size:
Approximately 6" x 6"

Gauge:
13 sts=4" in garter stitch with two strands of yarn held together

Materials:
size 11 US (8 mm) straight needles
size 11 US (8 mm) double point needles for handle
Sticky Velcro
Crystal Palace Yarns Meringue
1 ball Color 0438 Baby
1 ball Color 9628 Periwinkle
40% merino wool/40% acrylic/20% elastic nylon fibers
50 grams/1.75 ounces
123 yards/114 meters

Instructions:

Entire bag is knit in garter stitch (knit every row) with one strand of each color held together. You will knit a bias rectangle, knitting diagonally, that will measure 6½" wide and 13" long.

CO 3 sts.
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: K1, k into front and back of the next st, k1 (4 sts)
Row 3: K1, k into front and back of the next st, k to the end of the row

Repeat Row 3 until you have 30 sts.

Knit one row without increasing.

Row 5 (RS): K1, k2tog, k to the end of the row.
Row 6 (WS): Rep Row 3.

Rep Rows 5 and 6 10 more times. You should have 30 sts.

Rep Row 5 until you have 3 sts left. BO.

Handle
With one strand of each color held together, CO 2 sts. Work I-Cord for 18". BO.

Finishing
Fold and sew about 5" on both sides of long edges, leaving about a 3" flap. Sew on handles. Place sticky Velcro on inside of flap to hold down.
